First time taking my road test for my driver's license, during the parallel parking between two barrels that represent cars. I go to pull forward, the examiner asks me what I am doing. I explain that I am getting close to the barrel, need to pull forward. He states I have plenty of room & should back up a bit more. Being naive, I figured this professional knew more about driving than I did. BUMP..examiner says: You are in control of the car, you are responsible, never listen to someone else.
FAILED TEST.....naive teenager turns into angry teenager :M
Years later.... backing an Army jeep with trailer onto an Air Force cargo plane. Load master walks up, turns my sideview mirror inward, tells me I do not need to see, because I was to do what he tells me to do. Said if he caught me trying to see where I was going, he would put someone else in the seat.
I fought the urge to "look"....turned exactly as he instructed.
Moral of the stories. I always go with the first thing I learned (It is my responsiblity) unless an angry looking Tech Sgt, responsible for a billion dollar airframe, is threatening otherwise.
Most "parkers" could care less if you hit a tree, run over a bicycle, etc... they will not be held responsible for your equipment, or the equipment of others.
Stinks that you can't trust the help of others....doesn't surprise me that they would deny accountability.
