Exactly. I would have knocked on the door and asked them to move it and if not home, asked host to remove article from my site or move it myself. There might still be a confrontation with the neighbor (their choice) but at least it would not be a $500 costly debate.
Also, I hope the pit was friendly. That could also be a point of contention.
