So really it comes down to what you want in a MH and what you want to spend. You will spend more on a DP - In up front cost as well as cost of ownership. But a DP travels better for longer trips, rides nicer and is much quieter. But if you don't have a need for all that then you are perhaps spending more money than you have to. Unless you have deep pockets and don't care. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. But don't pay for what you don't need. Unless of course you want to.
Plenty of folks out there with very nice gassers doing a lot of travelling.
Ditto. I'd like to think our gasser is a nice Class A, but I'm under no illusion that it's the "same" or "better" than a DP when you compare performance and amenities. OTOH it's what we could afford, maintenance is lower than a diesel, fits our usage very nicely, and in comparison to our last setup (2000 F250 diesel pulling a FW) quiet at cruise and not as noisy up hills. The 7.3L in our truck is a great engine but not quiet.
Our MH is on a Workhorse chassis with the 8.1L engine - revs lower than the Ford V10 for the "same" torque / hp so that could be part of it. Don't forget the influence of doghouse insulation on noise as well.
It's also a matter of perspective. A previous comment noted that in their switch to a DP they can actually talk going down the road. That would be my observation going from our truck to our gasser :)
