Hello folks, first time poster here, if this post looks a little weird it's because I copy and pasted from a post I made at the bobistheoilguy forum. They referred me here, looking forward to joining the community here. Hey folks my last few posts here at bitog have been about finding a good used 3/4 ton diesel to upgrade from my f150 2.7 eco. I'm having a hard time finding a good pre emmissions truck in my price range that isn't junk and many people here have recommended a gasser which honestly I didn't really entertain. I'm now thinking that may be a good option considering towing mpg between the gassers and the diesels are almost identical from my research.I'd love a 6.2 f250 but they are hard to find used and when you do they are just about as expensive as the diesels. I've been looking at the 6.4 rams which seem to have good reviews and I wanted to see what this community thought of that engine/drive train combo? Does dodge still have weak transmissions? The 6.2 seems to out class the 6.4 but the ram hits my price range in the low 20ks far more often than I can find the f250s.For the record my f150 tows my new 7600lb gvw 33ft travel trailer pretty good but I'm up against payload and weight and I'd really like to add a 50 gallon tank in the truck bed so I don't have to weasel in and out of tight gas stations every 150 miles. Would be far easier to fill up in a rest area with a added tank.Looking for any info on gas vs diesel towing, hoping to be convinced that gas is a viable option for me(full time rver, 15k a year/60% towing). Any info on the 3/4 or 1 ton gassers, especially the ram 6.4 would be appreciated. Also any info on aux tanks for gassers would be great, if I'm not mistaken all gasoline tanks have to be manually pumped right?Thanks

IF you are certain that you will be staying with a tt and not upgrading to a heavier 5er, any 3/4 ton truck should be immensely more capable than the 2.7 f-150. There are some on here with 5.7 rams with bigger trailers and going full time, they dont always go fast but they roll. The 6.4 should be more than capable for what you ask, up to about a 12000 lb trailer, at that point it starts getting to always diesel range, and yes, I know some on here will tell you that you need a diesel dually for pulling a popup. But if your truck has payload and tow capacity of more than 25% above what you are doing, it's generally going to be well capable.

I can tell you, the mileage on my 6.4 gasser is TERRIBLE. Do I care? Not really. For my RVing isn't about pinching pennies.The mileage is so bad, I don't drive it around town much.Unloaded I get about 7 city miles (lots of very short trips with lots of stopping along the way) and 15 highway (1+ hr operating at high speed)Towing I get 9 to 10 highwayThe ride is great, I really enjoy the 2500 over the ram 1500 I traded in. it's quieter on the inside, handles more gear with ease and I don't notice grades at all really, going up or down. But I have a tiny trailer compared to what a lot of folks with big trucks are pulling.

I'll be looking for smiles per gallon not miles per gallon at that point.

The modern Ram transmissions are pretty good in the 2500-5500.The 6.4L Hemi might feel a little less powerful than your EcoBoost, simply because it has to turn more RPMs to make the same torque (and therefore the HP is "peakier" as a result).Towing fuel economy should be similar to your EcoBoost. The big hit would be driving without the trailer.

I should have put that differently. I know diesels get better mileage. What I meant was my mileage pulling my 7600# bumper pull is within 1-1.5mpg of the guys I know with new duramaxs pulling their 5vers. We are all getting about 10. They could get more but they like to pull at 75mph. I just meant that gap has closed up some with modern gas engine/drive train combos plus mpg robbing emission equipment on the diesels.

Your test is faulty. You have too many variables to even make an assumption. Different trucks, different trailers, and different speeds. There is no reasonable way to make any conclusions from that sample or formula.

My DIC monitor for oil changes usually gets down to 20% around 7,000 miles and I go to the dealer for an oil change (and recalls, updates, etc.). Every time I leave there is a sticker on my window telling me the next service is due in 3000 miles. Why? Because the dealer sells oil changes. So, why would NGK tell you to replace plugs every 30K miles? Like everything else, follow the $$$$.

Agree. When I had mu 12 CTD the lady at the counter would try and get me to do unnecessary maintenance when I was paying for oil changes. I said they weren't due yet and her reply was "We recommend it" I gave here thumb forefinger money rub sign. End of that conversation.

The guy had a screen shot from NGK. Went to their website myself with the part number and sure enough it was there.

Maybe it is due to them being aftermarket quality versus production quality. That is the case with many products in the medium and heavy duty world.

Not sure why guys are changing at 30K with no issues? One guy was at 83K and was changing because he stumble onto the thread. Didn't sound like he had any drive ability issues.

People change a lot of maintenance items like filters, fluids, belts, valves, and so on before any signs of drive ability issues.

It appears by NGK's website that it is true unless that is and aftermarket plug and not the same spark plug as OE production plug as I stated.

I do all my 100k mile plugs at 50-75k miles. Preventative maint. is better than waiting for something to happen. Same with oil changes and trans fluid changes the earlier the better.
