Question on the Cummins 340

I'm about to make a bid on an Allegro Red 38ft. In my 30 plus years of RVing I have always owned a gas rig. My question for Allegro owners is: Is the Cummins 340 engine sufficient to handle the mountains of the West? How heavy a toad do you pull with your Allegro?

It is a beautiful MH, and the floorplan fits my family's needs.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Gary

  • If you following the weights and capacities of your coach it should not be an issue.
  • ALL Tiffin REDs have Cummins ISB 340hp engines.
Great engine, GREAT Fuel mileage and plenty of power to go up west coast mountains with engine brake to help you back down.

On the way up and over I70 at the Eisenhower tunnel we could pass semis and other motorhomes with bigger motors.
  • You didn't mention the year of that RED?
Or if the engine is an ISB or ISC?
There was a lot of overlap there, depending on year.

ISC's are way bigger (8.3 liters vs 5.9 or 6.7) and have a lot more torque.

The Cummins ISB engine is a great little engine. Orginally 5.9L now 6.7L. Until recently most 38' DP's had a Cat 7.2L or a Cummins 8.3L engine. Doubt the hitch will be rated more than 5,000 lbs so there's your answer. Yes it will get you there and on flat ground you may get 9-10 mpg at 60 mph.
  • The topic of horsepower is sometimes beat to death on RV forums but what I've found with my diesel trucks and now my motorhome is torque is what counts. I believe the Red has the ISB engine which has lower torque numbers as compared to other Cummins series engines with the same horsepower.
  • Gary, while researching our change from gas to diesel we learned a few things about the 340hp vs 360hp or 380hp. Although our choice was not Tiffin, here are some things to look at:

I don't think you'll have much problem with hills no matter which diesel you choose.

The important thing to us ended up to be not how much we could 'tow' but how much can we safely 'carry' in the coach.
The Carrying Capacity was way less on the 340. Some are close to capacity right from the factory. Some of the things that affected the carry capacity were the following:
    1. Allison 2500 vs 3000?
    2. Tire sizes 255 vs 275 or 285?
    3. Front air bags smaller on the 340?

You may also find that the hitch is 5,000lb on the 340 vs 10,000lb
  • The 340 should do fine on all the major highways.

If it doesn't fit your needs you can always program it. see the banks home page for options.
  • Gary, it's all in comparison to weight vs. horsepower. IF you are at 36,000 lbs. or less you should do just fine. How heavy is your tow vehicle?

    MM.
