Radiator leak?

I have a 99 Dutch Star by Newmar Freightliner Chassis, 3126 Cat, Side radiator.
The radiator has a leak towards the bottom inside. Looks like a rock hit it.
What steps did you take to get the Radiator out?
I have a Radiator shop here in town that can fix it if I can get it out.
Thanks,
Craig

  • If a rock hit it, wouldn't your insurance cover the repair? I remember seeing another post in the "Breakdown Information" thread where the owner's insurance covered a radiator damaged by a piece of debris.
  • I'd be asking someone at the Newmar factory. They are the ones who built around it and know how to access it. If your real lucky, you might find someone who has done it over at the Newmar Owner's Group.
  • Mine went bad at 15k pulled by Quinn Cat in Calif. sent out for repairs. Shop said better to get a new Steel and Copper because the fix on Aluminum radiator will not last, so they got one from Radiator Supply House Sweet Home, Oregon.

Total cost with (coolant flush-Cat EC-1 Rated coolant)$5400
On a 400 Cat with side radiator. Mine looks like you would have to get it up high to get everything out the bottom.

  • It is the side radiator with 300 cat.
I havent seen any videos on the internet.
    Any help would be nice.

  • If it's like the 98 I had, side grill comes out, then intercooler and oil coolers come out before you get to take the radiator out. Took Cummins Atlantic a day and a half to replace the radiator when I broke down on the road.

  • Removal procedure will depend on both how it is attached to the chassis (Freightliner) AND what access the coach maker (Newmar) gave you to that area.

There is no "one answer fits all"-- even for coaches on exactly the same chassis.
  • First drain all the antifreeze and contain it safely as it is poison. Then remove all retaining brackets. For any more specific instructions give us engine, Vin etc. It may be on the internet with a video as many RV repairs are.
