How to find the polarity on insulated wires?
Follow the wires to a light or switch and use a voltmeter touching the probes to the contacts. If this is awkward use a couple of straight pins to penetrate the insulation and contact the insulation and contact the copper. Then use the meter.
When Current is flowing a clampmeter can indicate the direction of current flow.
