Shame on you is correct. Did you assume the tire pressure was checked, the oil level was ok, tanks empty etc. You pre-trip checklist should include testing all three systems, smoke, propane and co2. I can and do test mine before each trip takes 5 seconds ( I sleep better knowing they at least tested).
