Saber and Fyr guy -
I've had DirecTivo (as it was originally called) for over three years. I agree with Fy4 guy that the phone is not needed for programming updates, but it is needed for Software updates. Once every three months or so I hook mine to a land line and let it dial in, mainly to remove the "your unit hasn't called in" message. About once a year or so it also does a software upgrade during the phone call that I forced.
Don't forget to remove the DVR if you winterize your unit. I learned the hard way that the hard drive doesn't like freezing temps!
