It could very well be that way due to the fact that it was a truck and didn't have to meet car emission standards until the 80's.
He also mentioned it required premium fuel, another indication that it is running higher compression ratios.
Besides, 9.7 is not that high in compression. You can run a 10:1 engine on pump gas quite easily.
