Thanks for that ladder idea, DennyIda - sounds easy and safe.
I'm a little worried about a 2x12 though I'm only 200 pounds.
It might be worth building a little structure between two posts. Or a ladder-like thing that rests some of the weight on a pad on the hood or the front of the cab over, where the force would be horizontal.
