Rear rumbling & vibrations at hwy speed – Intermittent

Rear rumbling and vibrations at highway speed – Intermittent, getting more frequent
1999 Safari Zanzibar, Magnum Chassis, Diesel Pusher – The rumbling sound and vibrations in the rear are the same as when traveling over rumble strips. Previously, thought it was the road surface but now it is happening more frequently regardless of the road surface.
Please help identify this problem

  • Thank you all for your help with this problem. It did turn out to be the rear airbags. Because they were leaking, it put a strain on the U-Joints. We are having the airbags replaced and the U-Joints checked out.
  • I'm assuming the tires have the proper pressure.

U-joints would be the next guess. I had one go dry that would vibrate on down hills or coasting on flat ground. Otherwise it was smooth and quiet.
  • I first though you had your mother-in-law in the back seat when you said rumbling in the back.

Can you make the sound with the trans out of gear?
