rear view camera

Does the rear view camera in the Era work when going down the road for an aid in lane changing or just when in reverse? Can you buy an after market unit? The DW is very concerned about visibilty in heavy traffic. Please help, she is almost sold.

  • You shouldn't have any blind spots for lane changing when you're using just the side mirrors. It may take adjustment, practice using them, or even adding more/better wide-angle mirrors, but they should give you a good awareness of what's happening around your van. Look at tractor trailers; no rear-view cam, good mirrors, no problem changing lanes.

I've installed backup cams on my previous non-Sprinter B and my current small C. They're aimed down, to pick up the area right at & behind the rear bumper, used when backing.

Jim, "Never trust an atom. They make up everything."
  • Yes the rear view camera can be turned on while driving normally. You can also split screen it with gps. It comes on anytime reverse is selected. You must select it for it to come on other times. Easy to do. We have a 2013 ERA 70A. Could not be happier.
  • I bought mine on Amazon and have it installed for $70 . I asked the installer to have the camera turned on when I turn on the car (so I can see the back while I am driving) .

The camera stays on while driving. I don't really use it for lane changing though. It is like the right side mirror, "objects in mirror are closer than they appear". I mainly use the side mirrors and sometimes the rear view mirror. The Era/Sprinter is a pleasure to drive. I should have typed that in all CAPS. I love driving our Era. The visibility is wonderful for safe driving and for sightseeing. I guess I mainly use the rear camera when backing (careful) and to keep an eye on vehicles behind me when stopped. I suppose it could be used to make sure no fast cars are changing into the adjacent lane.

    +1, thanks.

  • 2013 Era.

So Newbrea, you can use it to change lanes, it does not switch off when put into drive?
  • I keep my rear view camera on all the time. I have a 2013 70A Era.
