Rearward visibility

Just got a new Pleasure Way Pursuit B+. We had a PW Excel for 8 years and traveled everywhere in it. I am used to seeing out the back window while driving but don't have a good view there with the new RV. It comes with a backup camera and good side mirrors. What do Class C drivers do to monitor traffic behind them but can't see out the back window? I will appreciate any feedback.

Remember that most delivery trucks and semi's are blind to the rear. It's mostly a matter of A) having the _right_ mirrors and B) learning to use them. My rear-view cam is great, but I use it for backing almost exclusively. You may need to add some stick-on 'fisheye' mirrors if the OEM ones leave you with blind spots to the sides. You can see a selection at any auto parts place.

I leave backup camera on during the day to monitor my bikes on the receiver bike rack, but the camera is not meant to be a replacement for a rear view mirror. No mirror is needed with proper side mirrors. Camera is for backing into campsites.

BTW--it is NOT illegal to have a monitor on while driving as long as it is being used as a driving aid (i.e. backup camera). It may be too bright at night and therefore distracting--mine is, so I just turn it off at night and only use it for backing up.

  • you can get a small backup camera system for around $100 and rig it to a on/off switch and use it that way. I tried the built in back up as up above but it becomes distracting and could technically get ya a ticket for having an operating 'tv' screen in front of the coach.

autozone has the 3.5 inch wireless that works well, got it on my F350
  • Our backup camera can be turned on by just hitting the power button while you are NOT in reverse. It stays on until you turn off the key or hit the power switch again. I have it on all the time when traveling, towing or not.

  • Why don't you wire your camera so that is is on all the time, even when driving forward?
  • Just use the properly adjusted side mirrors (with convex mirrors for blind spots beside you). Rear view camera is only used for monitoring the toad while driving or position the RV in a camping spot.
You will get use to it. On one car we had, the interior rear view mirror bracket fell of the windshield, never had a problem or missed it for two years.
