The trick is to not wait until you HAVE to stop for gas. After your tank gets below 1/2 tank, if you see a station you can pull in to...stop and fill up. We have stopped at little stores that only had two pumps outside that were parallel to the road. Easy in and easy out when towing. Other large stations often have the outside pumps that are easy to get in to or out of. If you wait too long to stop for fuel, your choices are always limited.
