Refueling problems

I hope someone can help me solve this problem. I own a 1998 Winnibago Chieftain with a 1997 Ford chassis, on my last trip to Mexico and back I have noticed that there was a problem refueling. I thought maybe it was due to the altitude but no, even in low altitude the problem still exists.
The fuel pump nozzle keeps shutting off every dollar fifty or so, some attendant told me that there was a buble in the tank. I am not sure.
Has anyone ever had this problem, if so what is the cause and how can I find out what is the real issue.
Thank you

One of the problems with RV's is the length of the fuller filler pipe and the angle it slants at.. Normally on a car the pipe is fairly short and heavily slanted down to the tank, but on an RV it runs near flat and much farther.

Thus, if the RV is slightly tilted TOWARD the pump.. What you describe happens.

if the RV is slightly tilted AWAY from the pump, better things happen.

I have also had this problem on a van when a vent hose somehow got kinked,

On my class A however,, I will drop the pump side rear jack to tilt the rig a bit if I have to. This helps.
  • I think you have a kink or blockage in your vent hose on your tank. Take the vent hose off if you can and check that it's clear.
  • You have a flexible rubber hose that connects from your filler cap to your tank. I am guessing that it may be time to replace that rubber hose since they will deteriorate over time and can start to close up and restricting fuel flow.
  • It is common. Have you check for kinks in the fill and return line. That is usually the issue. Might be time for a replacement.
