Reno to Phoenix area?

Hi good folks,
In early October the wife and I will be going from Reno to Leaf Verde rv resort just outside of Phoenix. I don't want to drive it in one day. What would be a good halfway overnight stay between Reno and the Phoenix area?

~Thanks, John
  • you didn't say what route you're taking but reno to phienix is roughly 12-hrs. vegas is half way, more or less. lots of parks in that area.
  • Unless you really want to stop in Vegas which can be a real pain; my preferred route is to drop off 95 and go through Pahrump. This will add roughly 10 miles to your trip but allows you to avoid 95 into and through Vegas. Pahrump is a good place to spend the night before heading on to Phoenix. And you can still gamble if you have a mind to. Mapquest is your friend and will guide you.

    Two options to choose from:
    1. Reno 395 to San Bernardino is 463 miles , approx. 8 hrs. then about 5 hrs. to Leaf Verde. This route is what I always use coming out of Bakersfield to Ariz. I come out of northern calif. and stop in Bakersfield and then from Bakersfield to Indio then on to Leaf Verde.
    2. Reno to Las Vegas then in to Leaf Verde. I have never RVed down hwy. 95 to Leaf Verde so I can't share any insight on what hwy. 95 is like as far as road conditions and for towing an RV. From Las Vegas to Leaf Verde is mostly a 2 lane road if I remember right.
  • I live in Carson City, NV, and have made many trips to or through Phoenix. The total trip is about 734 miles.

    From Reno I would suggest:

    I-80 east to Fernley
    Alt 50 to Fallon
    Hwy 95 to Las Vegas
    Hwy 93 to Phoenix

As far as stops, I would recommend an overnight in Beatty, NV, at 331 miles. Beatty RV Park Nothing fancy, but 50 amp FHU for $25.00 per night.

I would then fuel at Area 51 Alien Travel Center, 2711 E. Hwy 95, Amargosa Valley, NV.

The drive from Beatty to Phoenix is about 403 miles.

The above route and stops will allow you to drive through LV mid morning to early after noon when traffic is lighter than rush hour without needing to stop.

If you choose to overnight at Las Vegas that's about 449 miles from Reno, and you're bound to hit the LV evening rush hour traffic. Then when you leave in the morning you'll hit the morning traffic rush.
