Repainted the Front Bumper

I finally got brave enough to spray some color matched automotive paint on my "Tough Coat" painted front bumper.

But, I do not have a paint gun capable compressor.

So I used a couple of Preval Sprayers from Home Depot ($5.00 each) to apply the 3 coats of metallic urethane paint ($8.00/oz)

Then I sprayed 3 coats of clear coat using the SprayMax 2k two part rattle can.

This was not a smooth surface after sanding, but I have had success on smaller smooth surface touch up jobs.

Spraying a complex color coat seemed to work well with these toy sprayers. But I do not think you will get a Corvette quality paint job using one.

I was able to do this in my driveway using cardboard boxes to protect the concrete and good surrounding surface masking. The sprayers seem to produce very little over spray.

My materials cost for the entire bumper and sidewrap was about $125 vs the $1700 a shop wanted for the job.

  • Looks great to me. I like to see successful do it yourself projects. Painting is tricky (at least to me it is).

  • Thanks for the reply.

Some of the "freckles" that needed to be painted were caused by the polishing process.

The painted surface is not smooth, so the paint covering the peaks gets polished off.

So the shine I see, is the shine I get. :)
  • That looks fine. Some of the paint will allow you to use rubbing compound, after a month or so, to really bring up the shine. Personally I think it looks fine as it is.
