We also use the space for storage, but didn't want to put in anything permanent in case we needed the sleeping space for a grandkid someday.
Instead of plastic totes, my DW uses baskets. She has found a variety of sizes that hold our stuff pretty well, and in her opinion look better than plastic totes.
Works for us.
