Replacing carpet

Considering replacing all the carpet in my 40 ft pusher. Where do you go to get this done? What should I look out for? Has anyone had this done? How much does it cost?
  • I once hired a guy out of Cragslist to do a small carpet job.
    Worked out great!
  • Replace with tile or linoleum. Use washable throw rugs.
  • If you have ever done work on your MH yourself, its not hard, but does take time and patience. I figured out if I do it myself I can do do my fivers living room including the large slide for around 400 dollars.
  • "Kentucky Max"....I've done a couple of different coaches over the years, but nothing as a big as a 40'. Typically, the carpet is installed and the cabinets are installed over it, so it will have to be installed differently than it was originally done.

I would find a local carpet installer and see if he's willing to do it as a side job. A local RV dealer might have someone they can recommend.

One thing that is nice, you can cut along all of the cabinets and remove the entire carpet making a perfect template for the new carpet. Often, thin padding is used to keep from having issues with doors and slides binding up. If you have no slides, using a nice thick padding will give you some surpisingly improved sound deadening and insulation. You'll also find that they typically use about a 1000 staples when installing the original carpet. It took longer to pull all of the staples than the total of the rest of the instalation. If I wasn't so anal, I should have jsut flattened them with a hammer.
  • If you are anywhere near Weatherford, TX you might be able to get an appointment with Ernie. He's not cheap, but he's the best. He can redo your carpet or replace the carpet with hardwood.
  • I had mine done in my 42' pusher. Most of my carpet was in the bedroom and there was a bit on the LR slide floor. $1600 which included a high quality carpet and all labor. Work was done at a local RV repair shop who contracted the labor to a carpet installer.

You can save yourself some labor costs if you are willing to remove the old carpet, padding and staples yourself.
  • Ditto what Bill Satellite said. Ernie Eckberg in Weatherford TX is the best. We like Oak Creek RV Park in Weatherford.
  • I've only seen it done at the American Coach Service Center. They have the equipment to remove the slide and with ore than one person working move or remove chairs etc same in the slide. They then remove the carpet and prepare the surface and adhesive padding etc and,in a pretty straight forward fashion do the job. I don't know exactly how long but less than a shift as they have it down having done it many.
If one of their coaches they can give you the price to the dollar once the carpet you want is known without any foreseeable problems showing up.
