Replacing compartment door latches

A door latch just broke on one of my compartment doors. I found a place on the internet to buy replacement latches. In looking at the doors, I can't figure out what kind of tool I need to take the old one out. It is a Winnebago Voyage, 2005. Anyone have any experience with this?

  • If it's anything like the latches on my Journey, you will have to remove the pop rivets that hold the latch to the door. Sometimes I will drill them out. Sometimes I just use a sharp chisel and cut them off and punch out the core. There should be a cover on the back side of the latch handle that you remove to disconnect the rod to the latch. Then just reassemble with the new latch and pop rivet the new one in place.
I have been replacing mine with one that has an aluminum latch instead of the plastic one.
  • Well I just did it for my Fleetwood Bounder, but no idea if your compartment doors are the same. I assume you are talking about your outside compartment doors. I removed the 4 screws on the back of the handle, took the handle off and unhooked the rods that control the latch. Then I removed the two screws holding the latch to the door frame. Then I took a putty knife and wedged it underneath the latch frame doing both sides evenly until I was able to pry it out. Somebody on this forum gave me these directions and it worked fine.
