replacing my shocks

hello I have a 2014 31ft coachman leprechaun e450 I want to improve the ride if this is possible I have air bags on the rear along with factory ford shocks , I was thinking about replacing the shocks with bilstein or the more expensive ones has anybody replaced their shocks on their 31ft class c mine is only 2yrs old with 7000 miles on it but im thinking a better set of shocks would greatly improve the ride I would love to hear from you if you have thanks

  • Koni’s are great. Expensive, but the way to go.
  • Itasca Cambria 29ft. Replaced the stock shocks with Koni's and the slamming/jarring over RR tracks is gone, the side by side sway is much improved as well as the issue of big rigs trying to suck you underneath. A poster on here used Monroes and is still complaining. Pricey, yes. Quality shock yes.
  • Put on Koni adjustables. They cost $$$$ but you'll NEVER regret it
  • I would highly recommend replacing the stock Ford shocks. They were grossly inadequate on my 24' E450 class C (when new) which is well below max weight rating. They did not have enough control. I used the Koni FSD and can recommend. I also think the Bilstein HD would be fine.

I think there is lot of confusion here about the terms ride and handling. What I'm addressing with this post is the excessively loose control of the suspension with the stock Ford shocks on the class C motorhome. The Konis, at least, firmed that up without making the RV harsher in ride quality (slam, impact).

I have a 2014 Coachmen Freelander 28QB on a CHEVY chassis, which is totally different than your Ford. That said, the story may be the same.

When I bought this RV new, It had TERRIBLE bouncing or porpusing of the front end over "dippy" or roller coaster roads. On one road near us, the front wheels would actually come off the ground.

Within the first month, I changed the front shocks to Bilsteins and had the front end aligned at a Chevy Truck dealer. I changed the shocks myself.

The cost was $200 for the shocks and $200 for the alignment, but the results were worth THOUSANDS!!!

This is our 3rd Class C and this one has the best ride and road handling of any of them.

Remember also that even if you have rear air bags (as I do) UNLESS they actually raise the rear end up when you inflate them, they are NOT doing anything and adding air if you don't actually NEED to may make things worse.

  • What sort of ride improvements are you looking for? Replacing the shocks won't make the E series chassis ride like a Cadillac (or like a diesel pusher class A with airbag suspension). Replacing/upgrading them may help with bounciness after a bump and to some extent with general handling and cornering.

To answer your question, I have not replaced my shocks, but I'm kind of planning to do so before too long as they seem to me to be getting rather worn out.
