Replacing Propane Tank

My RV shop said my propane tank wouldn't pass re-certification so I'm in process of dropping the tank.

Question is, will the new tank come with a gauge attached?

There are plastic tabs on the side of the gauge. I'd bet a whole $1 they'll break off before I can peel them back far enough to slip the gauge off.

Here's a closer view -

Soooo . . . . will the new tank (supplied by Manchester Tank, which is at the RV shop) have a new gauge and just crimp wires to it?

Let me know - I'm running out of daylight!

  • Irrespective of regulations/re-certification, looking at that tank, it is a VERY good idea to replace it. And, if you spot rust on the new tank, take care of it-- should last forever.

That looks like a class A tank.. Now I do not know why the RV shop says it wont pass re-inspection.

I do know they do not require re-inspection unless you feel the need.

(If the shop says it won't pass. i'd feel the need).
  • Permanent mount tanks do not require any recertification so why is this
RV shop saying it needs a recertification? I would take the MH to a shop and have them sand blast the tank or wire brush it yourself. I'd then repaint it with Rustoleum paint. My old 78 Winnebago is parked at a campground and they still have the old tank filled, they usually last the life of the RV. I wire brushed and painted that tank 20 years ago before I sold it.
  • Tank is removed, gauge is intact and new tank (Manchester # 6802) is sitting at the RV shop.

Gauge had to be very carefully pried off.

I lowered the tank with a floor jack with an 8 - 10" box on top of the jack. It wouldn't clear from under the motorhome so getting the tank fully out was the (last) fun part. Tank is probably 40 - 50 lbs almost empty.

    That was fun. Next?

  • Manchesters tank has the optional remote gauge connection.
Inspect your tank closer to find make and model. Look at link for mesearuements. Find a propane dealer that will get the exact replacement even if it costs a little more, do it right. Saves money in the long run.

Found out new tank does not come with the plastic dial gauge / sender.

Tank is being replaced. I need to get the gauge off. Somehow I feel like there's a special tool involved . . . .

    An idea for shims?

If I were you, I would replace the gauge/sender while replacing the tank as a proactive maintenance tasks to not have a problem a month after the struggle to replace the tank.

  • How old is your RV?
Would think a new gauge would come with tank install.
Compared to $$ of new tank. A new gauge should not break you.
  • Not sure on the gauge - but how or why did you ever let things get that rusted? If the rest of your unit is that rusted, you got more and bigger things to worry about.
  • I can't get the 2nd photo to view despite several attempts . . . . and now it shows up in original post.
