replacing valve stem seals ford 460

I have a friend with a 1989 class A ford 460 which needs the valve stem seals replaced. I'm wondering how difficult this would be as far as access. I've done this job on an old mustang inline 6 I use to have with the head on the engine and it was very simple. Took like an hour. I'm wondering if I can help my friend out but I know access is always the issue with motor home big block engines. When I speak access I am particularly referring to thevalve covers and spark plug holes plus the crank shaft pulley to turn the engine to Tdc as needed. Thanks

  • Matt,

Be aware that you could be working one of two cylinder heads. The valve stem seals could be different between the two.
If the MH is on an Oshkosh chassis with carb, you will need to get the cylinder head part number from between cylinders# 2&3 or 6&7, just below the valve cover.
If on a Ford F53 chassis with EFI, the cylinder head part number is E7TE.

  • Since you've done the job before, pull the cover off the engine box and check it out. You should be able to tell if you have access or not. BTW I need to replace the valve seals on my 460 and after checking my rigs access I've decided to live with the problem a while longer and perhaps roll it in with some other future repair (no sense in getting all filthy twice). Not nearly as easy access as my car had!

  • Matt,

Class As are all different, and without knowing how much working room was left, nobody can even give you a decent guess. If you can't find someone that has had the same coach, you really won't get a meaningful response.
