A closer examination revels that the seal may have been weeping oil. Now off come this cover for the very least a new seal and some paint. Can't stand looking at the rusty thing.
note that there are two timing indicators, one welded to the cover which you could never see when this is put back together, and one on the bottom right bolted to the oil pan bolts.
