I am thinking some plastic trim used for around doors. I have seen some at Home Depot and Lowes that looks about the same thickness, not sure yet how I will adhere the assembly together. Your idea sound good, I thought I might do it the same way they did with fiberglass matt over the top. I am willing to try something new and use the adhesive you mention. The specs I see say it has a better shear value then just using a sheet of mat over the plastic.
