If you look closer, it seems the bottom is held to the top by three long bolts. I don't see any water intrusion at this time around the unit. Along the sides you can see some fiberglass insulation about 3/8 thick, between the intake and the exhaust area of this assembly. The large square pipe is the cold air return for the AC unit.
