Results of super steer on DP

I have been debating what shocks would provide the best ride and handling of my short(34ft) DP. Been researching shocks but found a site that sells super steer air bag controllers. They install on each air line and prevent the rush of air out of the bag on hard turns/side winds thus improve handling. Interested if anyone has them and the results. Also Koni vs Bilstein on Spartan Summit dp chassis. Normal typical loaded travel weight 20000/21000 lbs of 22000.
I want better handling not a harsh ride in trying to trying to make improvements. Any suggestions?

  • Our previous coach was a 36' Winne Journey on Freightliner XC chassis. I replaced the Bilstein shocks with Koni FSD and the ride improved....less harsh.

I did not like the way the coach leaned in turns, freeway off ramps and wanted to minimize the Walmart Wobble. I installed a set of Hendersons Supersteer Motion Control Valves on the air bags. The difference in how the coach handled was amazing. Less lean, less wobble, just made it a real pleasure to drive. Others I know reported similar results with the MCV's.

    X2 ;)

Source Engineering in Coburg, OR now makes their own motion control valves. They claim to be superior to the Supersteer units so you may want to check them out.

You typically don't get that much air exhausting the airbags on corners and in wind. Personally I would not go for air bag controllers as I think they would inhibit the way the airbags are supposed to work. I would have the ride height checked for your coach it may make a difference.

Shocks are a debatable subject with lots of differing opinions. I don't
think a different shock will make that much difference. Some here say that one is way better than the other and some say they didn't see a great change. A shorter coach will ride rougher than a longer one so it may be what it is. My coach on some roads rides terrible and there is lots of road noise. But on other roads it rides great and handles like a dream .
  • My reservation about it is that my coach has ping tanks in the air lines to absorb some of the air that is pushed out of the bags when you hit a bump, effectively softening the spring rate and smoothing out the bump. It looks like the Super Steer flow controllers would defeat the function of the ping tanks make the ride rougher. Also, they would slow down deflating the bags in preparation for leveling and might slow down filling them when you are ready to leave. Hopefully you get a response from someone with actual experience on these issues.
  • I have a Blue Ox True Center that can be adjusted on the fly for wind and road crown. Works well for me. I may install Thse at some point.
  • Bilstein shocks are gas charged so even on a small bump, like a road joint, some force is transferred back through the chassis.
The Koni FSD shocks are NOT gas charged and I find that they absorb most small road bumps and do not transfer them back through the steering.
I replaced my Bilsetin shocks with Koni and am glad that I did.
I found NO difference with the body lean or the action of either Koni or Bilstein shocks on large bumps.
