My AH is in the same bay as the water tanks, and the radiator/fan is on the passenger side of that bay near the AH. I have no idea when I will be in freezing weather to play with it, and I might go with your suggestion and install a Tstat with temp read as well.
Sounds like you have more room in that bay than I do Ivylog. I do have a little space and I do have it consumed with 'stuff'.
