road side assistance for semi-converted bus?

My son's band bought a 24 passenger shuttle bus for touring with his band. They stripped out the seats, added bunks a couch and TV's. He tells me that AAA will not give them roadside assistance because it's not considered an RV.
Does anyone know of a company that they could get roadside assistance from at a reasonable price. They put on many tough miles and have broke down at least three times in the last 4 months at a cost of $600 a tow each time.
Thanks.

  • Thanks for the replies, I will forward the info onto the band. Looks like the best option would be to reclassify it as a van.
  • He needs to add the amenities to register it as an RV (permanent cooking, bathing, toilet facilities) and chance the registration, then he will be eligible for RV roadside assistance.
  • 3 tows in 4 months? I would give much more thought to maintenance and repair than insurance or "free" towing.
  • If they removed seats so it holds <16 people (including driver), it's no longer a bus. Basically, it's a really big van and can have regular plates.

Sounds to me like the vehicle in the OP's post has serious problems.
  • Another thing you should think about is the driver's license. Vehicles registered that carry over 14 passengers require a passenger endorsement CDL license to operate it. I would look into getting it reclassified as an RV
  • If it's still titled as a commercial bus I doubt anyone would accept it as an RV. Even with bunks and TV's it's still technically a bus titled to carry people, not function as a recreational vehicle. RV roadside services do not cover any commercial vehicles.

There is no kitchen or toilet, not holding tanks or water system.

They should check with DMV to weigh their options about registering the bus as an RV, ... then roadside service "might" be available. But, only if the RV isn't used commercially. Being owned by the band still makes it a commercial vehicle.

    Just my 2 cents
