I also carry road service with my insurance as a secondary plan. However, 25 or 30 years ago I never gave much thought and would jump out and change my own tire, except on CA freeways. Not so much any more. Plus I don't have a spare or lug wrench large enough to change a 22.5 inch tire. I agree being near LA tow trucks are more readily available.
