He had already installed one, but I agree, if he could return it and get a AC/DC LCD TV they would be better off, especially with lower draw on the battery. It never hurts though to have a small inverter in case they need to power something when not plugged in. They have no generator.
If there's no 12 volt receptacle he will have to wire one in for the car cord.
