Roadtrek 190P, rear shocks

It's been over 10 years since I did that job on my '99/'00 D190V, but I dimly recall it being a massive PITA. I know I managed to figure out something that worked without cutting anything, but have no real recollection of what. I do recall something about reassembly... maybe holding the nut in a box end wrench with duct tape while I started the bolt? I do know the job's a bugger. My sympathies.
