Roof top air conditioner

I am installing an ac unit on the roof over the rear bedroom on my 2002 Hurricane class A with 30 amp service and has two thermostats one in the front and one in the bedroom . The pass thru in the roof of the rear has a 12/2 romex wire at that point but no 110 volts and I am not able to locate a source as to where it goes. Is there a relay between the front and back or does this wire just dead end somewhere. I cannot locate a switch or any connection for the 110 volts.
  • I can't stand the noise with both running. We run the bedroom during the day and the living room at night. Have 50 amp, but I will not put up with the noise.
  • I traced the wiring with a wire tracer I found at HD and it went across the ceiling along the the wall then down to the floor and along the floor then down thru the floor to a weather proof box under the RV. It then dead ended at that point. So I rerouted the romex to the Circuit Breaker box and was lucky to have a spare spot to install a 20 amp breaker. Made a real clean install. I installed a Colman Cub Air Conditioner that uses 11 amps. Ran both air conditioners at the same time for a short time and didn't have any problems. Will run the refer on gas and remind the wife not to use the Micro if both are running. Thanks for the hints.
  • Interesting thread... Sounds almost like an RV styled damper but with fans. LOL
  • You're going to need to break into behind the breaker panel and find the dead end romex. Also you will need a 20 amp breaker suitable for the installed panel. Four Winds installed the needed power wire but they won't add the breaker. Too much risk that an owner not knowing flips the breaker on and either burns the coach down to the chassis or someone get a 120 volt wake up call when they touch the fan that normally fills the hole. As mentioned watch your power usage. Running both is a maybe on 30 amps. Turn on the microwave with both ACs running and probably everything is going to go dark.

The former owner did the install on my Hurricane but I also have a 50 amp panel. With how the panel is arranged and a 30 amp gen-set I can not run both ACs or the electrical side of the water heater when on the generator. We run the back during the day and the front at night. Moves the noise away from the living area at the time. The rear is not connected the the wall thermostat. I don't think Four Winds included zone control between the front and back. Our Hurricanes are a bit to far into the 'Entry Level Class' for such for such a feature.
  • Since only one a/c can run on thirty amps and probably both on gen. look for a couple of switches you are not using. Usually mounted side by side. If you find the pair of switches they are probably both down now. move both up and you should have 110 in the new a/c. If thermostats mention zones then they might be the power switch.
  • It was most likely put there by the factory for an A/C but not used.....and it is most likely not hooked to 110V at the breaker box either.
