Rotate tires on Class A YES OR NO ( why?)

:h

jb
  • I've always heard that generally speaking there is no reason to rotate them unless you actually drive enough miles to wear out the tread. I replaced my first set of tires at 30,000 miles and 8 years of age, and it really hurt to get rid of tires that looked like the tread was brand new. The tires were showing age cracks in the sides so it was time to change them. The same thing will likely happen with the current set of tires, so no reason to rotate them.
  • Seems tough to rotate the tires since it would require taking the tires off the rims and than remounting them.

By the time a wear problem shows up the damage is done; it can't be reversed. All you can do is repeat the uneven wear to the other side

We rotate annually: (All tires are Michelin XRV and same size.)

Year 1: Right duals to front, fronts to right rear.
Year 2: Left duals to front. fronts to left rear.

We do wear out our tires after 100,000 miles or so usually in 5 or 6 years.

The toad tires are rotated every three thousand miles or so. (The fronts get a lot of scrubbing).

And then try to determine why?

x2. my RV-mechanic sees no need to rotate them given the relatively low miles we put on them. we also replace after 7-years.
  • Can't hurt, but you're limited in what you can do as you shouldn't break up a dual pair.

That said, if there isn't any noticeably uneven wear and you aren't planning to wear the tires down completely anyways before replacement, I don't see much of a point.
  • I recommend rotating the tires every time you drive the RV. Preventing them from rotating causes very rapid and uneven tire wear and leaves ugly black marks on the pavement. :p

Seriously, though, why bother rotating the tires if you, like the majority of motorhome owners, will be replacing them due to age rather than due to wear? You won't be extending their life in any useful way, and won't be saving yourself any money.

If your usage patterns do make tire rotations somewhat sensible, you are somewhat limited by having dual wheels on the drive axles in what rotation patterns you can reasonably make. You don't want to rotate the steer tires to the dualies, since they will have worn at a rather different rate and so be a different diameter than their partners. If you have a spare, it might make sense to rotate the spare and the steering tires and leave the dualies alone (assuming the steer tires wear faster than the drive tires, which I gather is often the case). Likewise, you could rotate them with singles on a tag axle if you have a tag axle.
  • Since class A uses similar tires to a semi this is what I'd say. Check your steer tires they are probably different from your drive tires. If they are, unless you have a wear issue I'd not worry about it. If you have a wear issue I'd check a tire inflation and/or an alignment front and rear axles. once had an axle out of alignment (front drive) and until they aligned the whole truck it ate tires off that axle.

A good tire shop can "read" the wear patterns and diagnose the problem.
