Down here you used to be able to get used restaurant oil for free, or very cheap. Then the inevitable happened........people started advertising how they could take the oil and use it for fuel. Once that happened, the used oil became a valuable commodity and the restaurant owners now look at it as a profit source. Right now, new fresh oil is selling for only a few pennies more than the used oil.
One other problem is that once you have exhausted your first tank of veggie oil. then what? You have to fill up just like everyone else unless you limit your travels to a small radius around your home base.
