Several years ago at a Fire Safety seminar at a rally, Mack the Fire Guy asked how many ran with the propane valve on. Many hands went up. He then asked how many of those were professional Fire Fighters and all the hands went down. He then said that he had never had a Fire Fighter admit to running with the propane on. As a retired volunteer fire fighter I found that interesting.
Without going into details we once had an incident that made me glad that we rarely run with the propane valve open.
Any professional Fire Fighters care to comment?
First, let me say that I am a big fan of Mack the Fire Guy.
Did he say how many fire guys he knew that had an RV and how many of these did or did not run propane? My guess is...No! Mack does an excellent job of explaining the safety issues that RVers deal with, but at the end of the day he's out there to sell you fire extinguishers to pay his bills (even after his sponsorships).
If there is any RV manufacturer out there that specifically says you should never run your fridge or your furnace while in-motion they would also put in a cut-off to prevent this operation. They already do this with your TV if it's within view of the driver and yet I am not aware of one single manufacturer who puts the same cut-off on your propane tank, your fridge or your heating.
The realities are that bad things "can" happen but then so do traffic accidents. If you are concerned that your furnace will blow up you should not use it. You just need to keep this in the same context. If you are afraid that if you drive you will be in an accident, you should not drive.
