rust / Workhorse

Our ‘07 Itasca SunCriuser 38T is having rust issues. We do not stay in MI for the winter nor do we travel in areas were salt is used on the roads. The coach is washed regularly and detailed once a year. In the seven years we have owned the coach we have only spent about 10 weeks in FL near the Atlantic Ocean and cleaned while there. I know that Workhorse is now out of business but wondered if other Itasca or Winnebago Workhorse owners have been experiencing this same rust issue.Any ideas on solution? Anyone have luck contacting Workhorse?
Thank you
Bill

You live and drive in the North where salt is used on a regular basis during the Winter. The salt does not disappear at the end of the Winter. It just blends in to the surrounding soil and is present when the Summer rains come and allows it to be deposited on the undersides of any vehicles.

We had enough rain to thoroughly wash any salt away. That is an old wives tale. In nmany cases the MH may have been delivered in the winter and got the snow and salt during a January or February delivery. We used to live in Clinton Twp. (15 & Garfield)

  • If you coach sits on regular ground and not on concrete or asphalt, the moisture comes up from the ground and gets on the chassis and this could be your rusting problem.
You might put a plastic tarp under the chassis to stop some of this.
I had a Vette that I wrecked and put into storage back east and didn't put any plastic under it and it has a very rusted chassis within 5 years when I came to pick it up. Sold it for junk.

  • Do a Google search for Winnebago rust and you'll have a lot to read. I don't know about chassis rust, but we sit on a Ford chassis. Even under warranty Winnebago blamed me for the rust and the coach had never seen a salted road. My rust was finally repaired under warranty.
  • Navistar bought Workhorse in 2012. I assume you are speaking about rust on the chassis not the coach. Rust prevention is a maintenance item and would not be the responsibility of the manufacturer, especially after the three year warranty has expired.
