RV GPS

Hello everyone: We are considering buying an RV GPS. Would love to hear comments on what and what not to buy and if you think they are worthwhile compared to our regular GPS.

Thanks, Vikki

  • The GS GPS has gotten good reviews. It was developed for GS by Rand McNally. Has both RV and Auto modes. Believe it also comes with lifetime updates.
  • We have also used Microsoft Streets and Trips for several years with the little GPS module. I like the ability to use S & T on my laptop to plan a trip, modify routes, identify points of interest along the way, etc. However, it is a bit dopey to have the laptop on the dash...not impossible but not as easy as it sounds on our current coach.

So, we recently got the Garmin DZL760 GPS which has a large screen and many useful features for RVr's. While it is developed for the commercial truck driver, it works very well for RV use. In fact, we have learned to develop a trip on the laptop with Streets and Trips, then download the trip to the Garmin. Then we use the Garmin to help keep us on the desired route.

Our coach also has a Pioneer GPS built into the dash radio/back up camera monitor. We recently got this coach so I have little experience with the Pioneer but I plan to see if Street and Trips routes can be downloaded to the Pioneer.

There are many GPS options so you have many choices. However, we have learned that any of them will occasionally 'lose its mind' and try to send you on a rabbit trail.
  • Don't get the Magellen that they push.
It sucks big time. A lot of towns are not on the Magellen
And that makes it almost impossible to go the routes you want to run.
Scenic and or lesser used US hwys seem to be excluded from the Magellen.
Plus it is not user friendly.
Use your smart phone and a good app like MotionX.
It talks and we use it in place of the Magellen. It just does not have low underpass info for RV. But we watch the signs and have never had a problem.
  • We use the Microsoft Streets and Trips software with the Microsoft GPS. We put the notebook computer on the dash and run the Silverleaf VMSpc vehicle monitor on half the screen and GPS driven Streets and Trips map on the other half. When we have passengers we connect the video output to the overhead TV for their watching pleasure.
