RV storage compartment straps

My 20 yo Class C has plywood storage compartments under the dining seats. Since I drive a lot of mountain roads without guardrails, I think about the scenario of rolling down a mountainside. It would not be fun, but having my toolboxes and other heavy gear flying around would not help matters.

After discovering that the 200+ lb water tank was no longer even secured with a single belt and two deck screws, I decided to upgrade to two straps:

Then I went ahead and did the storage compartments also:

I had two inch mil-spec buckles left over from old harnesses, so I used these. To secure the nylon webbing, I wrapped it around Hillman 1-1/4 inch perforated steel angle from Lowes.

After wrapping, I used a heated nail to melt holes through the webbing. Then I secured each mount with bolts run through the webbing and angle.

It is very important to check for things like gas and electrical lines before doing any drilling.

In some locations, underneath was accessible so I used 1/4 by 3 inch carriage bolts. The generator blocked one area, so there I used heavy 1/4 by 1-1/2 inch hex lag screws into the plywood flooring:

It might be stronger to sew the webbing, but I believe these mounts are very strong. They are certainly better than nothing, which is what I had before.

As always just tossing this out to give others ideas and your mileage may vary.

  • Well good point, but keeping the compartments closed would help with one roll or a flop over
  • Looks nice. Good job.... but...

"I think about the scenario of rolling down a mountainside."

If that actually happened, these boxes would be splinters strung all down mountain.
