There are ways, legal and illegal ways to do it.
Legal you use a transfer switch to lockout power company connection.
Illegal you shut off main breaker and connect from gen to house wiring with jumper plug into dryer/range plug for 240 V.
I have 3 generators and had to get by from 4 hours to up to 12 days with different storms.
