RV Toilet Treatment

Interested to know how many use "liquid" black water treatment vs ready made "drop in" packets. Also would like to know which brand you recommend and which brand seems to have the longest odor elimination timeline.

  • Why do you think you need a black tank additive???? If you have a odor, it's because you have a problem with your system. A seal may be out, vent tube blocked....etc. The black tank is sealed system (with the exception of the vent tube or when flushing the toilet) and should never emit an odor into the rv.

Black tank additives are NOT needed nor required. Much like special rv toilet paper, additives are just a sales gimmick for their manufactures. Using plenty of water during toilet flushing and when draining the tank should be sufficient. Also keeping the tank free of lingering "stuff" when draining will also help with odors and keeping the tank sensors in good working odors.

Best way for this is when getting ready to travel, drain and rinse the tank and add several gallons of water. Then put in a cup of liquid soap (laundry or dish) and allow the solution to slosh around when traveling. When you get to your destination, drain and rinse the tank once more.

Always keep plenty of water in the tank at all times.

    Hope this helps

BS you get a 75 gallon holding tank 3/4 full in 100 degree heat and it smells. just have someone flush the toilet and stand below your vent pipe.

I find this works well for me especially in warm weather

  • Living in SoCal, where daytime temps often exceed 100, I have found the Thexford with formalin to be most effective. When traveling to campgrounds with septic systems I will often skip treatments to avoid adding formaldehyde to their tanks, but when staying home, or at a resort with sewers I stick to the blue stuff.
  • X2 on only water, and plenty of it. Only time we ever has a stink issue is when we had the roof vent open while driving and DW flushed the toilet.
  • The only time I smell any odor is when I dump at the dump station. Nothing here.
  • My tank never stinks unless it's really hot outside. Even then I don't use treatment.
