Sales Tax in South Dakota

Does anyone know if you are a South Dakota resident will you have to pay sales tax on the purchase of a new motorhome. We are thinking of going full time this year and debating which state to call home. If the purchase of a new motorhome is in our future I would like to avoid the sales tax of Florida. South Dakota seems to be the easiest state to become a resident of if you live in an RV. Any suggestions would be welcome, whether you have a Class A or not!!
LOL,
Thanks,

I just renewed my tags and it was $482. I have a 2012 Fleetwood Discovery 40X.
  • In SD, you will pay the 3% of the purchase price if you are buying a coach outright without a trade in. If you have a trade in, then you will pay the 3% on the difference.

The license fees depend on the year and weight of the coach.

  • It is very easy to get set up for SD residence. Contact any of the mail delivery services and they will help get everything handled. As a true SD resident we like getting your tax money even though it is not a lot.
  • South Dakota charges a 3% "excise tax" on vehicles, including motor homes. We saved a significant amount by becoming residents before buying our MH in Ohio. If you trade, the 3% is figured on the difference.
