San Francisco

Hi All,
We are planning a trip on the 101 from Saskatoon Canada
to San Francisco Via Portland Or. I have most of the trip
planned but I'm having trouble deciding where to stay
in San Francisco. Can I get some help please. Where is a good
place to camp for a few days. From here we will be off to Las Vegas

Thanks,
Doug,
  • If you have a smart phone, you can download an app called "RVparky". It gives you a lot of info.

I would stay away from the Candlestick RV Park as it is in a less than desirable area.

  • Not very many RV parks in San Francisco, so I recommend the KOA in Petaluma. It is right near Hwy 101. Then a day trip into SF in your toad, over the golden gate bridge, toll going south, free coming back to Petaluma. That way you can scout out your route through SF if you decide to continue later on 101 in the MH. Lots to see and do in SF, just not very RV friendly for driving. About the toll going south over the golden gate, I think they take a picture of your vehicle license plate and mail you a bill for the toll but not really sure how it works for out of state vehicles. Maybe someone will chime in later.

  • Camping and a wealth of other outdoor activities are available only 20 minutes from downtown Oakland at the 5,067-acre Anthony Chabot Park, part of the East Bay Regional Park District. It's a beautiful year-round public campground with miles of hiking and riding trails.

We did not stay on the peninsula but stayed here a few years ago at Anthony Chabot County Park. The BART is a few minutes away and it brought us right into San Fransisco.
  • How close do you want to be to San Francisco? The San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica is very nice. You can park right at the edge of the cliff overlooking the ocean. Just watch your step.

Although I have never stayed there, there is an RV park at the Alameda County Fair Grounds in Pleasanton. That's about 30 or so miles from SF, but there is a BART station near the fairgrounds and you can take BART right into SF.
