Setup/Takedown Checklist

We are very excited to be picking up our Class A Coach (1999 36' Holiday Rambler Endeavor gasser) this coming Friday. Since I'm a newbie and am learning everything I can before I actually hit the road on trips, has anyone developed a checklist for setup and takedown to make sure everything is done? I sure would be appreciative if I could learn from everyone else's experience and not forget some major component my first few times out.

  • Check campsite for clearance's
Let DW out to guide me and watch while backing in
Position RV where I want it in the campsite
Wife lets the dogs out to give their OK and investigate immediate area
    Kill the engine
    Extend jacks to level
    Turn off electric at post
    Plug in electric from RV
Turn breakers back on at post
Turn on A/C (don't want it getting hot inside)
    Set sun shades in windows
Check that fridge switched to electric
    Turn water pump off
Hook up and turn on water
Check water pressure gauge and make sure valve is set to 'City Water'
Hook up sewer if it's available
    Wash hands :E
Extend Awnings (most of the time)
    Stake out carpet/mat
Set up chairs and side table
Set up gazebo (most of the time)
    Set up BBQ grill
Set up Dish antenna and TV's
    Nap :Z

Breaking camp is basically the reverse order of things except I don't kill the engine, I start it. I also load the wife and dogs instead of putting them out. But I do check the campsite and make sure it's cleaner than when I got there.
  • There is an App for Ipad and Smartphones available that covers all the bases from to Departure ,Arrival and Camping preparation.

Adventure treks rv checklist. I found it in a discussion on another forum and decide to give it a try.

Real easy to work with and changes can be made to suit your personal needs. Its free so that makes it all the better to try.
  • If you're over 50 and don't use a checklist, you're just asking for trouble.

I found an app for my iPhone that is perfect for this. It's called RV Checklist (whodathunkit?)

  • Sorry I don't have a departure checklist. But, I do think it is a great idea, especially if you are new to RVing. It can stop that embarrassing moment someone waves you down because you forgot to put down your antenna. (Yes, it happened to me.) Or forgetting to raise your jacks. (I was so lucky that my jacks just go down to the axles and not the ground. I would have had major damage if I had the ground leveling jacks.)

You could use a checklist like http://changingears.com/rv-checklist-departure-motor-home.shtml?sec-checklistthis one. But, I have to admit that I do not do all the things listed here.

On Edit: sorry for the very clumsy url but I apparently do not know how to use the url references on this forum. (It is much different than others.)

    Thanks!!! PM sent.
  • Welcome and congrats.

Turn off the electricity, at the pole, before plugging in and unplugging, to avoid arcing.
  • A checklist isn't a bad idea. I never did one, but I did get in a habit of making a pre-take off walk around. When everything is done and I'm ready to hop in the drivers seat I'll make one last walk around making sure everything is disconnected, didn't leave any chairs or anything under the motorhome, the jacks retracted, all the awnings are closed, sat dish and TV antenna are down, compartments all closed, etc. Do the same in the interior to make sure everything is secure and doors are all closed.
