Black tank closed until ready to dump (3/4 full or more).
Gray tank can be open or closed, but close it long enough before dumping black tank to get a full gray tank (3/4 full or more) to flush the dump hose (stinky slinky) out.
If you decide to keep the gray tank valve open, be sure there is a good U trap in your stinky slinky to keep sewer flies out of your tanks.
