The transfer switch has two relays in it. One for shore power and one for generator power. Each relay has contactors or contacts in it that pass both legs (if 50 amp) of your AC through to the main breaker. If one of the contacts on the shore side has come loose or burnt out then it can cause what you are describing. all the other things mentioned above are still possibilities of course but I just wanted to expand on the transfer switch issue.
