Should I buy it?

My kids know I have been wanting to buy a MH or 5th wheel sometime before I retire in 18 months. My son called and said his inlaws want to sell their MH. It is a 1994 Winnebago Brave 33RQ, 38000 mi. Looks good to me and the price seems good.
Any advice - pro or con?
  • I suppose the big plus is you get to ask if this was driven regularly or did it sit unused for extended periods of time. If it sat unused, you can count on tons of little going wrong for about the first year of use. If you are a DIYer, then it may be OK. What kind of climate was it stored in? In the north, there is salt. Even if it sits during the winter, the drastic temperature changes causes condensation, which results in corrosion. This introduces a strong likelihood of electrical issues. Sitting is not good for the motor, and especially bad for the trans. The oil does not get splashed around, and the seals tend to dry out. Oil does evaporate, so if there is contaminants from normal wear in the oil, when the oil evaporates, the residue tends to bond and gunk up the surfaces.

Under these kinds of circumstances, if a vehicle sits for a long period, usually when it first is brought back to life, everything works. Its only a few months later that things begin to show up. I'm not saying this is the wrong thing to do, but just you need to anticipate the potential for what may go wrong.
  • If you are sure it has been maintained and is a "good" buy then sure. Make sure that you don't over pay for the unit then if you decide you want to move up or go a different route than it wont hurt as much. Just do your research.
  • Purchased a 15 year old MH in excellent shape with 36k miles on it. BUT it is 15 years old and in the shop right now for preventive maintenance. I will do a full post on the Class C blog next week when I get it back. I am at $2500 dollars right now. I knew going in it would be $1400 for what I asked to be done. They added tie rod ends, differential seal, and new rear end oil. Remember I said it was in good shape. It is a 23 foot Class C with a V10. One thing I have learned about MH's is everything gets way more expensive the bigger and older they are. Read all the blogs on here before you buy great lessons.
  • "Your son-in-law's inlaws"??? Isn't that YOU?

Never mind the specifics...but as a member of a large and occasionally fractious family, I advise you to think very very VERY carefully about the wisdom of buying a twenty year old vehicle of any kind from a relative. No matter how distant.
  • Anything to get out on the road, but older with low miles does not necessarily = no problems. Depends on the maintenance and tires hoses etc. Vehicles need to run, and with that age and low miles not sure how much will need to be done to make it dependable. I like the 5th wheel truck combo, only have to keep one vehicle running and when I get where Im going have a truck to tour the area, and am not stranded. Good Luck!
  • Too old. Lots of potential problems. It has only been driven 1900 miles a year.
If you want a part time job, you have found it. It you want a reliable RV stick to something 2006 or newer.

The size is fine. Most USFS parks and campgrounds can handle it.
  • Sorry - forgot to ask - is this too big of a rig to be comfortable traveling urban?
