Since we are on a well, and our water turns off by a simple flip of a breaker switch, if we are gone for more than a day, we flip the breaker to the water pump off. Been doing this ever since we've lived in this house.
If we sprung a leak, we'd get a double whammy! Not only the damage water leaking will do, but the cost of electricity to run the pump. So we turn the water off.
If we were going to be gone for a month or so, or longer, I'd probably go ahead and relieve the pressure from all the lines by leaving a faucet open too, and drain both water heaters. Especially in winter weather.
