We go south for the solid precipitation period, brrr. I drain the lines, made provisions for this years ago when re-plumbing the house. Add the pink stuff to all traps, stools, washing machine and dishwasher. I like Dutch have a well with a pump in the garage. I use a small "Thermo-Cube", I think that's the correct name, and leave a light inside the insulated enclosure. The Cube turns on the light around 35 and off at 45 degrees.

Some do nothing and have never had a problem, glad for them. I've never been hit by lightning but with a metal leg I'm not going to dance on a hilltop during a thunderstorm. Sometimes you don't see the small victories in life.
